Why do children need to learn sequencing?

Sequencing is a critical readiness skill that lays the foundation for both reading development and scientific inquiry. This concept teaches children to recognize patterns, which helps them understand and predict their surroundings

What do children learn through sequences?

  • Pattern recognition
  • Arrange a series of objects or events logically.
  • Recognize transition words such as first, next, and last.
  • Understand story elements such as beginning, middle, and end.
  • Understand stories
  • Retell stories and events from the past
  • To communicate, arrange words and sounds in the correct order.
  • Maintain daily routines at home and at school.

Using story pictures, help your students understand the sequencing concept of first, next, and last.

Students select a worksheet, cut out the sequence picture cards, and paste them in order for this activity. I teach my students to use the details in the pictures as a brainstorm of the events they will write about  while they are ordering and pasting the pictures.

The ability to sequence events is a critical skill. It is applicable to all subject areas and is used at all grade levels.
