Phoneme substitution is a phonemic awareness skill in which students remove a sound from a word and replace it with a new sound to create a new word.
Phoneme substitution has proven to be difficult for my kindergarten students. Every day, we play a quick oral substitution game, but I still notice that some students take a little longer to come up with the correct answer. So, for my word work station, I created these BOOM Cards. During station time, students can practice this skill on their own.
Our emerging readers require as much exposure to word sounds as possible. Unless you are working one on one with a student, you will require additional support, which Boom Cards provides. In this deck, students listen and repeat the word. For example: "Escucha y repite la palabra rana. Cambia /r/ a /g/, ¿Qué palabra formaste?" That cannot be learned through a worksheet or even a hands-on center. The Boom Cards' embedded sound files are necessary for your students.
Giving our students immediate feedback improves their comprehension and academic performance. We prevent incorrect patterns from forming by providing immediate feedback on their response.
Boom cards are an effective tool in the classroom for helping students improve their phonemic awareness and become more fluent readers. Try them out for yourself and see how they affect your classroom.
The best thing is that your students will be having so much fun that they won't even be aware that you are grading them.
Play with letter sounds with your students, and they will develop critical phonemic awareness skills that will lead to reading and spelling success.
